"Domini Canes" is Latin for "Dogs of the Lord," and is referring to a legend related to the naming of the Dominican Order, where Saint Dominic's mother made a pilgrimage to the Abbey at Silos and dreamt that a dog emerged from her womb holding a torch in its mouth, and "seemed to set the earth on fire."
